From a bourgeois house to Relais & Châteaux
History of La Maison de Famille
Here, in the family house of Lorains, situated on 14 Faubourg de Paris, the story of la Côte Saint-Jacques begins right after the Second World War.
During the worldwide conflict Marie Lorain receives the relatives of the prisoners of the camp situated in Joigny; she provides them with accommodation and food. Beginning from 1946 she converts this huge bourgeois house in the family guesthouse.
This house is located on the below road of la Côte Saint Jacques, beautiful hill sheltering the vines of Joigny and so the name of "Côte Saint Jacques" came so naturally to her mind.
In 1958, Michel Lorain, son of Marie, who had just finished his studies of cook takes the helm of la Côte Saint Jacques with his spouse Jacqueline and brings new changes – now the property becomes Hotel and Restaurant.
The first works and first challenges are to bring the water and central heating to all the floors while before the one had to leave rooms’ doors opened in order to get some heat of the stoves installed in the corridors!
Henceforth the House will never stop changing and improving: hotel as well as the restaurant.
In 1985, 15 magnificent rooms are created on the bank of Yonne river – commencement of slow migration of la Côte Saint Jacques to river edge. The tunnel connects now the mother house with a new residence.
In 1990, the number of hotel rooms reduces from 18 to 10 and beautiful meeting rooms flooded with a natural light are created. In the same period the national highway number 6 is deviated from Joigny which brings calm to the House. In 2008, 10 rooms of La Maison de Famille are totally refurbished; a new modern touch is brought to their decoration.
It should not be forgotten that it is within these walls that Michel Lorain gets his first Michelin star in 1971, the second one in 1976 and the third one with his son Jean Michel in 1986.
La maison de Famille harbours the dining hall and the kitchens until december 2000 before they are transfered to the bank of Yonne river.
La Maison de Famille, between History and Tradition, continues its changes over the years.
